Eduardo Mendoza: a la búsqueda de un espacio, un tiempo y un estilo
Posted by: admin in filosofía Add commentsLa aparición de La verdad sobre el caso Savolta significa aire fresco en la narrativa española. No sólo supone la revalorización de la intriga, sino la búsqueda de un perfil distinto y progresivamente paródico de novela histórica que se corresponde con el reencuentro de la trama. Mendoza es un novelista catalán que se sirve con eficacia y naturalidad del castellano para describir ambientes catalanes y barceloneses. Sigue, pues, la estela que forjaron narradores tan dispares, en la postguerra, como Ignacio Agustí, Luis Romero, Francisco Candel, Antonio Rabinad, Ana Mª Matute, Juan y Luis Goytisolo o Manuel Vázquez Montalbán. El postfranquismo le permitirá liberarse de las preocupaciones de la censura. Su obra se desarrollará y alcan-zará su verdadera dimensión durante la etapa convulsa de la transición, durante la que, en sus primeros años, Barcelona jugará un papel decisivo que irá disminuyendo progresivamente. La primera novela de Mendoza se basa en la imagen nostálgica de otra Barcelona más convulsa todavía, azotada por terrorismos de signo contrario: el anarcosindicalista y el financiado por la patronal, amparada por el Gobierno. En una nota preliminar, el autor indica alguna de las fuentes históricas utilizadas que constituirán su telón de fondo. Pero el concepto de «lo histórico», ya en crisis, permite definir la novela de Mendoza desde otra perspectiva a la utilizada por los narradores realistas y naturalistas o cuantos se habían servido del ensamblaje entre historia y ficción hasta los años sesenta del siglo XX . Resulta fácil calificar el conjunto de su obra en los parámetros de la «postmodernidad», término al que nos resistimos (como su mismo autor, que prefiere en su ensayo «La novela se queda sin épica» el término «posvanguardia») por su vaguedad y equívoco significado. De este modo manifiesta, sin embargo, conciencia de no haber participado en la novela «neovanguardista» a la que aludimos anteriormente, aunque no desdeñará algunas de sus técnicas. Tampoco resultaría difícil para el lector de la época establecer fáciles paralelismos con los acontecimientos que se desarrollaban a su alrededor. Los elementos narrativos utilizados son múltiples, aunque simples. Mendoza se sirve con soltura del diálogo; pero también del relato en primera o tercera persona, descripción objetiva, interrogatorio policial, cartas, artículos periodísticos: un amplio abanico de recursos que diversifica las formas, multiplicándolas, atenta a la aventura, alejándose al tiempo del realismo y del experimentalismo. La segunda novela del autor propone, desde su título, el atractivo de la literatura popular, El misterio de la cripta embrujada. También en este caso, la primera edición aparece en el mes de abril de 1979. Pero si la anterior era una novela de perspectivas que conformaban un paisaje social histórico, no exento de humor, aquí el autor emprendía una labor más difícil. Situaba el relato en la contemporaneidad y la sugestión de lo mágico. El capítulo tercero, el personaje que sale del manicomio y aterriza sin saber dónde en una ciudad inhóspita, salvado el tiempo y el tratamiento narrativo y estilístico, coincidirá con el protagonista de su tercera novela y con el de El tocador de señoras (de no menos intencionado y equívoco título). Pero, en esta segunda novela, tampoco abandonó la estructura del relato policíaco, al que añade rasgos folletinescos y hasta góticos. La locura constituirá, paradójicamente, el signo de la absurda lucidez en un mundo confuso. Se trata, en realidad, de una narración paródica y, como en su novela anterior, no sólo de formas, sino de géneros. El protagonista salta a un patio, tras haber descubierto el cadáver de un sueco, amigo de su hermana: «Durante el trayecto, mientras efectuaba involuntariamente volatines en el aire que trajeron a mi recuerdo los que en su tiempo hiciera el malogrado príncipe Cantacuceno, y por no tener nada más que hacer, di en pensar que me rompería la crisma como colofón del vuelo. Pero no fue así, o no estaría usted saboreando estas páginas deleitosas, porque aterricé sobre un legamoso y profundo montón de detritus, que, a juzgar por su olor y consistencia, debía de estar integrado a partes iguales por restos de pescado, verdura, frutas, hortalizas, huevos, mondongos y otros despojos, en estado todo ello de avanzada descomposición, por lo que salí a flote cubierto de la cabeza a los pies de un tegumento pegajoso y fétido, pero ileso y contento». Este modelo descriptivo, de estilo arcaizante, irá tornándose más paródico hasta culminar en el «disparate», la inverosimilitud como recurso fundamental de su producción más reciente.
Tras El laberinto de las aceitunas (1982), que hemos de situar, asimismo, en el ámbito de la novela policíaca de humor negro, en 1986 publicó La ciudad de los prodigios, considerada hasta hoy como su obra más representativa. También aquí, la ciudad de Barcelona es la auténtica protagonista. En esta ocasión, el marco histórico elegido es más dilatado: el intervalo entre dos Exposiciones Universales, la de 1898 y la de 1929. Cabe recordar al respecto que la ciudad mediterránea estaba construyendo entonces el «modelo» de ciudad olímpica, ya que los Juegos se realizaron en 1992. La mezcla de vida cotidiana y ficción, el costum-brismo, el desengaño –tema generalizado en la producción del narrador–, su escepticismo ideológico, que le han convertido en crítico a cualquier política, pero en especial al entusiasmo que despertó el nacionalis-mo catalán en ciertos sectores de la burguesía catalana y su aproximación a determinados puntos de vista socialistas se reflejan en el relato. Su protagonista, Onofre Bouvila, coincide con el despertar urbanístico de la ciudad, alcanza su cénit y acaba desapareciendo entre las ruinas de las ilusiones frustradas. Responde, yendo más allá de las circunstancias, al sentimiento del desengaño político, del escepticismo político y social que se intensifica durante y después de la transición democrática. La normalización política había despertado el interés en Europa hacia las manifestaciones artístico-literarias hispánicas. Las expectativas irán disminuyendo con el tiempo. De ahí que su obra posterior, La isla inaudita (1989), constituya un paréntesis que se califica en su contraportada, con justicia, como «un “viaje sentimental”, un interludio romántico, una novela de amor y de humor». La ciudad elegida no será aquí la capital catalana, sino Venecia. Y en ella y sobre ella fabula Mendoza, desgrana su fantástica capacidad de contador de historias, de las que, sin embargo, pueden extraerse conclusiones éticas. El novelista no renuncia ni a lo simbólico, ni en este caso, a la mítica de una ciudad convertida en eje de la civilización europea. Los diálogos, en los que muestra siempre su destreza, pueden ir de lo trivial a lo trascendente. El médico Scamarlán, al que su interlocutor llama Pimpom, narra la historia de Charlie y de su mujer, aludiendo a la naturaleza del amor: «…Además, permítame discrepar, como hombre de ciencia, de eso que usted llama amor./ – Dicen que hay quien se muere de eso– apuntó Fábregas./ Más bien hay quien se aferra a esa quimera cuando se siente morir de otras causas más crudas –replicó el médico–; pero dejemos esto también: es algo abstracto, un asunto académico que podría conducirnos a una discusión eterna y sin objeto. Yo le cuento lo que hubo, y luego usted lo adereza como mejor le plazca, ¿qué?». Podría realizarse un estudio paródico de los nombres utilizados para definir a los personajes, como ya advertimos en obras de Pérez Galdós, Valle-Inclán o C. J. Cela. Aferrado a los hechos, el protagonista, como el narrador, nos permite extraer las oportunas consecuencias. Las historias, algunas producto de tópicos (como el de las mujeres envenenadoras o los mitos lacustres) nos alejan de un pretendido «romanticismo». Ciertos recursos barojianos parecen evidentes. El autor ha mostrado su fidelidad al novelista vasco en su estudio, publicado en la colección «Vidas Literarias», en 2001. El humor destruye cualquier idealismo. Su trabajo con la forma dialogal había de conducirle al teatro. En 1990 estrenó una pieza teatral en catalán, Restauració, que sería vertida al español por su autor y publicada en 1991. Ambientada en el marco histórico del reinado de Alfonso XII, se inscribe en lo que se ha venido calificando como «teatro poético» al que pretendieron dar carta de naturaleza, al tiempo, algunos poetas españoles de la «generación de los años veinte», T. S. Eliot en el ámbito inglés y hasta Paul Claudel, en el francés: unos en verso y otros en prosa, aunque diferenciándolo del llamado teatro en verso (en ocasiones escasamente poético). Que el tema teatral no habría de resultarle ajeno lo comprobamos, asimismo, en su novela Una comedia ligera (1996) que tiene como protagonista un autor de comedias en la Barcelona de la postguerra. Dos años más tarde con este libro alcanzaría en Francia el Premio al Mejor Libro Extranjero. En 1991 publicó Sin noticias de Gurb, aparecido anteriormente en forma de folletín veraniego en un periódico. Se trata de una narración paródica siguiendo las pautas de la ciencia-ficción, situada en la Barcelona post-olímpica mediante un sistema perspectivista propio de la narratividad dieciochesca. Al año siguiente aparecería El año del diluvio. En esta ocasión el marco urbano ha sido sustituido por el rural, aunque la historia pretende ser narrada con sencillez. Se mezcla la anécdota amorosa de los protagonistas, con la pertinaz sequía de la postguerra y las inundaciones que permitirán caracterizar el relato como drama colectivo, en años en los que actúan todavía algunos focos del maquis. El inicio mismo de la novela viene a definirnos su pretendida oralidad expositiva: «En los años cincuenta de nuestro siglo vivía en la localidad de San Ubaldo de Basora (provincia de Barcelona) un hombre muy rico llamado Augusto Aixelà de Collbató». Pero, sin duda, con La aventura del tocador de señoras (2001), Mendoza ha dado un paso más en su estilo paródico, en la utiliza-ción del lenguaje popular, en la inverosimilitud como recurso narrativo, en la configuración de personajes caricaturescos, expresionistas, siempre sirviéndose del relato policíaco, de un anecdotario abundante, de un costumbrismo deformado. El tiempo elegido es el presente y su espacio sigue siendo la ciudad de Barcelona. Es, sin duda, la más barroca de sus producciones. La aceptación popular de su obra, desde sus inicios, no puede justificarse tan sólo por la adaptación de algunas de sus novelas al cine. Eduardo Mendoza ha permanecido fiel a un mundo elaborado, inspirado en una realidad que decidió transmitir siguiendo pautas y recursos que la alejan de la verosimilitud y la convierten casi en onírica, a un estilo que le identifica y que le sitúa entre los narradores españoles de mayor proyección internacional.
